i receive a blinking amber light and when I open airport utility the message is internal disc drive needs repair
In Applications > Utilities folder is an app named Disk Utility. Launch it, select the Time Capsule disk, then run Disk First Aid. If the disk can't be repaired by this utility, you'll have to replace it the hard drive inside TC.
The Disk Utility can't see or repair the Time Capsule's internal drive or any other network share. Click here and follow the instructions.

What model TC do you have?
This is important because a disk error can be caused by faulty power supply.
As per doco from Neil there is only one thing you can try and that is an erase from airport utility. (Disk utility is useless for network drives).
We have noted some false readings.. We recommend you power down the TC for several hours.. overnight say. And then factory reset when you power up.
