Will a 4k monitor work with a 2560X1600 iMac

The display on my 2010 27 inch iMac just died so I am using an external 20 inch 1680x1050 Cinema Display temporarily. This iMac can drive a 2560x1600 external display.

What will happen if I hook it up to a 4k UHD monitor. Will the monitor display a 2560x1440 image or no image at all?

2010 27" iMac ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB card

LG 27UD68 4K monitor

Mini display port to display port cable

3840x2160 30hz - font is way too small to read and 30hz is too choppy!

2560x1440 60hz - font is just about the right size but appears a little blurry. 60hz is noticeably better!

FYI: The display port on the LG 4K monitor must be changed from version 1.2 to 1.1 in order to work with the 2010 ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB card.

FYI: El Capitan DISPLAY System Preferences only shows 1080p and 720p resolutions when this LG 4K monitor is connected via the Display Port. To see the 3840x2160 30hz and 2560x1440 60hz resolutions, hold down the OPTION key and click on SCALE.

Connecting via the HDMI port only delivers 1080p maximum resolution with this 2010 iMac.

iMac screen replacement would cost $600, LG 27UD68 4K monitor cost $397.
