External GPU and Mac compatibility?

So i've seen the razer core thats coming soon and it made me think if there was a Mac equivalent.

I've been browsing around and i've found a product called BizonBox2 which looks pretty handy. As far as i know an external monitor is required as thunderbolt cannot use the built in display.

Does anyone have a definitive answer in terms of compatibility and performance as this seems to allow Macs to game at much better settings. Has anyone actually tried this? if so how did it go and would you recommend it?

Thanks.

There are no officially sanctioned eGPU solution for Macs, but rumor suggest the only real obstacles are that Thunderbolt 1/2 eGPUs fall slightly short of theoretical performance and, worse of all, are not hot pluggable.

A DIY forum not implicitly linked to Apple would probably have greater freedom/experience to provide specific answers.

As for performance see this BareFeat review.
