Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with updating your Mac is not what you expect. If I understand correctly, you are unable to restart to finish installing a security update. Here is what I suggest to resolve this and get your Mac working properly again:
1. Use "safe mode" to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, deletes system cache files, verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed. Then test your issue again.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up
Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode
2. If that doesn’t help, start up your Mac into OS X Recovery mode and try running First Aid on your hard drive with the built in Disk Utility tool, as this can correct simple issues like you're experiencing. Then restart normally and test your issue again.

Sep 4, 2016 11:31 AM in response to Gerry Waldenby madrich,I seem to have had the same problem. I rebooted my MBP three times, and it was "stuck" on the restarting Apple screen. I finally left it alone on this mode for about 12 minutes and my computer restarted and was Aok.

Sep 4, 2016 11:34 AM in response to madrichby Gerry Walden,Thanks for the reply.Yours wouldn't restart whereas mine won't close down. Similar I guess, but different. I have left mine all night and it is the same, so I will try the suggestion above.
Gerry
