My wireless keyboard keeps typing weird characters.

I took it to the Genius bar and they ran all sorts of test, said the system was very slow. They kept it for a few days and checked a few other things. They wiped the machine and then made me reload from a backup. That seemed to help for a little bit but now its back! I tried replacing the keyboard but that did not solve the problem.

I am wondering if there is something running in the background messing it up.

I do occasionally get an "alert detector" pop up could this be the problem;

I have a Late 2002 Mac Mini Running the latest OS X El Capitan 10.11.6

I just ran EtreCheck....can anyone help!

Thanks

Wendy

What kind of weird characters exactly?

Was the other KB with same problem also wireless? Maybe interference is causing the problem if both wireless

For slowness:

- using an SSD instead of a rotating HD will help

- Increasing memory will help

- Uninstall these two apps. The really do no good

FOr MacKeeper

Do not install MacKeeper

Those type of characters are generated when you push and hold a key and have the Key Repeat slider is set to On in the Keyboard pane of System Preferences.

Those can be caused by interference.

For MacKeeper it appears that you previously tried to uninstall MacKeeper but did not completely remove it.

You can try the manual; method in the following (reference in the link I provided in my previous reply)

Please determine if the same keyboard anomalies occur in "Safe Mode". Read about how to do that here: Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support.

It is a problem. You appear to have installed a system modification from a developer called "Motive" with names that suggest it is responsible for its appearance.

I don't know what "Motive" is or what it's supposed to do though, do you? If you do, get rid of it according to its instructions. If you don't, ask for suggestions.

Other problems exist, though they are not likely to be the reason for your keyboard anomalies. In particular, something known as "Advanced Mac Cleaner" appears to be installed. Whether it's a scam, malware, or some similarly categorized garbage isn't a distinction worth making – you should get rid of it.

"Bitdefender" is another, unrelated, but equally worthless piece of junk. Don't install such things. Please read Effective defenses against malware and other threats.

This is a feature called the Character Picker, which you can see in the first item of this Apple note:

How to type accents, emoji, and symbols on your Mac - Apple Support

If don’t need it and nothing else helps, you can turn it off:
