Q: No output /input devices found

OS X 10.11.6

MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013)

Processor 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Seems like the problem started after applying Security Update 2016-001.

I do not get any sound using iTunes, so it does not only happen when using Chrome

I have run Malwarebytes to check for virus, etc. and rebooted twice

Please let me know if any other information would be helpful in troubleshooting.

Thank you in advance for your assistance,

Nick

Try Safe Boot mode by holding down the Shift key at startup. Safe Boot is quite slow because the OS performs some cleanup and verification tasks, so give it time. After you're completely logged in, restart normally.

Thank you for the quick reply.  I did not resolve the issue; however, I noticed the speaker icon used to be on the title bar greyed out and now it is not there at all.  When looking System preferences/Sound it shows no output or input devices.

Try running the combo update. It installs all previous updates plus the new one, which can replace any files that may have become corrupted.

I get this message when trying to install the combo update.  It may mean I need more available disk space; however,  I could not find how much is needed.

I have freed up more disk space and now have 31.15 GB or ~25% available and still receive the message below.  Please provide next steps in troubleshooting this issue.

    Thank you in advance,

This morning I clicked on a web video forgetting my speakers do not work, and the sound worked normally.  No reboot or any other attempt to fix the issue since writing the above note yesterday.  The microphone now works as well.  Settings show the internal speakers and microphone as expected.  I am happy to have them both working again; however, I would like to do whatever possible to minimize the chance of it reoccurring.  Also, I would like to remedy the issue with the 10.11.6 combo update and get it installed.  I did try the installation again after the speakers started to work and received the same error message as above.

    Thank you,

    Nick

If things are working properly, leave well enough alone. Messing with working operating system could cause more problems.

Today I rebooted my MacBook Air and now I have the same problem with "No output /input devices found".  I think Sierra will be available on September 20th and would like your suggestion on fixing this problem now or waiting for Sierra.  I can live without speakers for 10 days.  A concern is upgrading to Sierra with this existing problem.  I did try the 10.11.6 combo update installation again and received the same error message as above.

    Thank you,

    Nick

You are welcome. Did you try the Safe Mode?

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferenes, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
