Do MacBook Air laptops come with Microsoft Word?

I have a refurbished (new to me) Mac Book Air that I just discovered does NOT have 'word'(or 'excel')!! I am kind of shocked but maybe I shouldn't be? The only comments within the community support group on this topic only had entries from no later than 2011. There were some good suggestions there about how to get WP for free or to pay for, but I wanted to make sure that Word is not supposed to be on my computer already. Version 9.1.3. (It does not say IOS but I am assuming.... ) Any info or suggestions are much appreciated

Word has never been a pre-load on Apple products. It can be purchased. As others have said there are alternatives to the Office suite but if you need near flawless exchange of documents with other Office users the best option is to purchase (or subscribe to) Office. A good "work-alike" is LibreOffice but documents don't always move back and forth between it and Office users flawlessly. Apple's iWork suite has its fans, I am no longer one of them and cannot recommend it if your needs are academic or professional.

MacBook Air laptops do not come with Word. --- neither do most Windows based laptops unless you pay extra for Microsoft Office.

Also, iOS is the operating system on iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch.

OS X is the operating system on MacBooks (and other Mac computers).

I suspect that you are looking at the version of Safari that is installed on your Mac. The current version of Safari is 9.1.3

You can see the OS X version on your MacBook by going to Apple menu > About This Mac

Forgot to say that Apple's Pages and Numbers is free on Mac computers purchased after October 1, 2013.

Other alternatives are to purchase or subscribe to Microsoft Office For Mac 2016 https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/cat/Office-for-Mac/categoryID.6 9404500

or LibreOffice works very well and is similar to Microsoft Office: https://www.libreoffice.org/
