This update ( Security Update 2016-001 El Capitan and Security Update 2016-005 Yosemite) broke my iMac. I had to restore from Time Machine 2 times!!!!!!!

My iMac after this update boot with grey screen in safe mode too, very bad update.

also happened to me on my MacBook Pro retina mid-2014 model. There must be something wrong with the update software! Frustrating when you are trying to do the right thing and keep up with the security updates!!!

Neither of my Macs are suffering from any problems from this update.

Update: I was able to get the security update 2016-001 installed. It appears to be fussy about some software you may have installed. I uninstalled the DuetDisplay software for using an iPad as a second monitor as it had loaded a kernel extension. I also uninstalled Evernote after the EtreCheck diagnostic app showed that the Evernote helper was crashing on load. I hope this helps someone else as I wasted hours today troubleshooting this.

I don't have these specific pieces of software but I do have a couple of things installed. Were you able to reinstall Evernote and Duet Display successfully after doing the security update? I need the software I'm using.

Also, any word from Apple on fixing this security update so it doesn't do this?

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for change. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.
