    No.

It sounds as if your iPhone is Activation Locked.  Contact the previous owner, or return the iPhone if you can.

To learn about Activation Lock, read the article I attached above.

Basically, if a previous owner has registered the iPhone using Find My iPhone and then has the iPhone lost or stolen, subsequent owners would be prevented from ever using the lost or stolen iPhone without the original owner's permission (which is given by releasing the Find My iPhone relationship).

No, you will not be able to erase the iPhone either.  Recovery mode would also require the Apple ID and password.

Visit this site and determine once and for all if your iPhone is Activation Locked.  You will need the iPhone's serial number:

    https://www.icloud.com/activationlock/

You should know whether the iPhone is Activation Locked.  If it is not, there may be other means to proceed.  But if it is, these methods are absolutely guaranteed to fail.

    That's not what was said.

No activation lock? = a resettable phone.

Activation lock in place? = no workaround possible.

Come up with the required password or present a valid proof of purchase showing you are the original owner.

What happens is that I started working at a phone store and I had a customer forget her passcode and didn't know her Apple password not even with the security questions and heaven know if she knew her email login. I just gave up quickly and refer her to the manager but sooner or later I need to help these customers. I just want to be sure I can help the customer if they lost their passcode and password because that would be the worst scenario. If the phone was stolen or reported missing I would not help them. I know u can have serious issues if u forget your google password and are doing a factory reset. This is why I'm scared to do a factory rest on a phone.Don't ask me how these people don't know their email info. Thank u for your time and cooperation.I need to buy an iPhone

    top practice.

If you want to help them, then refer them to Apple's account security team.

Do not take it upon yourself to do something which can lead to the customers blaming you for their problem (because you know that's exactly what they're going to do).
