Q: how do I cancel the "read receipts" on my email account

"read receipts" are a feature of your email account provider's service. What service do you use?

From my search, folks say Apple Mail app does NOT support read receipts

me.com is not your internet service provider - it is a web based email service by Apple. You are paying someone to provide you with internet access.

What app are you using where you see the read receipts? It is not the Apple Mail app as the OS does not have that feature. Other than Messages, do you use some third party application on your Mac or the iPad?

As I said, Apple Mail app does not offer the option of asking for read receipts.

Do you get these when you receive emails? If so, then it is whomever is sending them and their software that is set to ask you.

The common App in OS X and iOS is "Messages"

As posted in the 2nd link (in  BOLD) above, there is a "checkbox" for sending "read receipts"
