Q: Aperture Browser shows master and all versions: how to switch back to showing only one version?

Aperture 3.6: somehow something changed: in the browser I now see several versions of each image (master & version), how to switch back to only showing latest version? (note: I do NOT want to close stacks, just not show them)

Mac Pro (Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), must be setting: 'suddenly appeared

Have you recently enabled the Aperture preference > Advanced :  Create new versions when making adjustments?

The Aperture will create a new version whenever you adjust your image.  With this preference disabled, all edits will be piled onto the current version without creating new versions.

You can automatically stack the new versions if you are using "Aperture > General> Automatically stack new versions".

But there is no option to prevent the multiple versions of a photo from showing in the Browser, afaik, if the version stack is open.  You can either stack multiple version and keep the stack closed, or refrain from creating new versions for each edit.
