IPAD mini 2 long time to charge and heat issue

Hi,

My friend who is a god-father of my son just gave me a pre-owned Ipad mini 2 128GB to give to my son. First thing I did when I got home is to charge the said device. Once it turned on, I connected it to my wifi. At around 40% charge, I checked the SW version and it showed that there is an update available (9.3.5). I waited for it to charge a bit beyond 50% then upgraded the SW. After the upgrade, I continued charging the device and one thing I noticed is that when the device is ON, the back heats up. So pressed the power to turn the screen off and allowed the device to continue charging. When screen is OFF, it does not heat up. I called my friend and asked if he was experiencing the same thing when he was using the said device and he said NO. But again, he is not sure how is it now since he has not used it for a while.

After having it charged to 100%, I tried using it. The device heats up after 15-30 minutes of usage. However, when you put it in sleep mode. The temperature drops down again. I tried playing a youtube playlist so that it will stay on for quite sometime and again it heats up.

Does anybody have an idea on what is the probable cause for this? Is it battery issue?

I am in a bit of a fix now since I already showed this to my son and he is already looking forward for this device. I cannot give it to him if I cannot fix this heat-up issue since I'm scared it might explode.

Appreciate any input you can give.

A certain amount of heat is normal, my iPad Air gets warm on use, particularly if the screen is very bright (outdoors) and/or viewing videos. You could take the iPad to an Apple store for testing (the test is free) or try downloading the app "Battery Life" which is available for free from the App Store. Test the battery with it and if defective, schedule an appointment at an Apple store for possible replacement.

Hi Elcpu,

Thank you very much for the prompt reply.

Unfortunately, I don't think the heat I am experiencing belongs to the certain amount of heat criteria.

Btw, the heat increase started when I first started using the device, that is when I was setting up the device.

I also tried using the app you recommended, it shows the battery status to be very good and wear level is at 3%. Any other possible issues? Can it be attributed to 9.3.5 firmware? That was the only thing I changed when I received the device.

Update:

Took my device to apple authorized service center. The kind lady checked the diagnostic report of the device and she said she doesn't find anything wrong with my ipad. Probable cause of heat was due to some process crashing. She asked if I upgraded the unit and I told her that I upgraded it to 9.3.5 as soon as I received it.

She said to do a full system restore from the ipad itself by going to setting - general - reset - erase all contents and settings. Then after that, manually install my apps one by one. She said that there was no sense it paying 350 SGD (got me confused since the website only states 288 SGD) to have the unit replaced when she doesn't see anything wrong with it. I do agree that I don't need to pay that much if the device is working well.

What I don't agree with is that process are crashing and there was nothing wrong with it? The device might not have any fault but it seems the SW does. Hopefully apple can do something about this.
