Q: my iPhoto question-EDITED

My 6 year old MacBook Pro running OS 10.9.5 has totally bamboozled me. While trying  to set up a selection of pictures from the many in iPhoto to run as a screen saver, I somehow have rendered the iPhoto app inaccessible. All I get when I try to open is a window telling me your photo library is either in use by another app or has become unreadable. I tried the shut down the computer idea to no avail. Next I tried to stop and reopen while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. Again no success. All my photos appear to still be on the computer because I can open them individually from my Documents folder. What can I do to get iPhoto back to normal? I'm stumped. And I feel really stupid.

Have you tried booting into the Safe Mode to see if it will open there?

    Safe Mode

    Safe Mode - Mavericks

    Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

    Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application, and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
