My iPod has a sad face, exclamation mark and says www.apple.com/support/iPod. I've tried resets described here but it doesn't work. It makes clicking sounds on boot up. I've connected it to my laptop but it doesn't recognise the connection?

The sound you describe indicates your iPod's hard drive is probably faulty. Try putting it into Disk Mode

to see if it goes passed that error screen. if it does, connect it to your computer running iTunes, and try doing a Restore on iPod in iTunes (your iPod will be erased).

If hard drive is found to be bad, you can consider replacing hard drive with commonly available flash-based storage, in the form of compact flash card or SD card. This web site has relevant information
