A1126 Macbook Pro won't boot

Hey everyone,

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro modle A1126. A few weeks ago I was using it and he screen froze and I has to do a hard reboot. The machine started and it worked again for about 20 minutes and then froze again. When I restarted it again I got small squiggly lines inside the apple logo. I was able to do a PRAM and SMC reset and got it to boot successfully again and then I performed a clean install of OS X El Capitan which solved my problem for 2 weeks. Recently it started doing the problem again and I have been unable to fix it. I have ran the Apple Hardware Test and it came up with no problem. I was finally able to get it to boot in safe mode to put this post up. Does anyone have any ideas on what the problem may be? I am really hoping it is an easy fix like a bard hard drive or memory and not something like a logic board. I know this model had issues with the graphics card but I'm not sure if it is that. When it did finally boot I was able to copy the error report which you can see below. I have also attached a picture of what the apple logo looks like when it boots.

I do, I was just trying to hold off as long as possible. I hate going to tech support desks cause most of the time they are useless and just give a random list of issues that could cause the problem. I would assume apple is different since they are focused so highly on customer service. I was hoping there was a more strenuous test I could run myself to tell me the problem cause I can fix it as long as I know what the problem is.

What was your issue and what were they going to charge you

Sep 4, 2016 11:09 AM in response to Scott0810

I'm pretty sure a MacBookPro3,1 (your actual product code shows in the panic log)--which returns to a Mid/Late 2007--is too old for Apple to work on. According to this Apple article:

Vintage and obsolete products - Apple Support

it is considered "Vintage/Obsolete" and Apple have discontinued hardware service except in certain places shown in the article where local warranty laws make the manufacture liable for a longer period.

If you do take it to an Apple Store that agrees to look at it, this is what you will likely hear assuming the tech has been working for Apple long enough: That model was notorious for the "Nvidea Curse." Nvidea sold bad Geforce 8600M GT chipsets to many computer makers including Apple. Those chipsets fail over time and with heat, and the only sure fix is a new logic board. Parts are not available.

You report confirms the issue both in showing that chipset installed and in the "Kernel Extensions in Backtrace" section that shows a laundry list of dependencies related the the video hardware.

This was the Apple web page the dealt with the problem:

MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues - Apple Support

My MBP3,1 died with a permanent black screen at boot in June of 2013, six months after the repair extension program for this problem expired. Apple told me they had no repair parts for that model. I bought a new MacBook Pro.

If the problem is intermittent, try to keep the computer as cool as possible and don't run apps like games--they elevate the temps. Also avoid playing DVDs--that also runs up the heat. Back up everything of value on the hard drive as soon as you can. If the video does not work at all. you can attach it to another Mac with FireWire ports and use FireWire Target Disk Mode to mount the MBPs hard drive on the other computer where it shows as an external drive. That's how I salvaged files off mine when it failed.

Sep 4, 2016 1:43 PM in response to Scott0810

Well, my issue was a graphics card issue. I had the logic board replaced two times under AppleCare and then a third time because of a recall for that issue. The last time it was repaired was in April, it just happened again in August. They told me this time it would be $300 for the repair. It was a 2011 15" MBP that I had since June 2012.

The Genius was nice enough to talk to the manager and got me a brand new 2015 MBP. Great customer service.
