Issue when changing inbound mail server on IOS device

I hope that somebody will be able to provide some guidance on an issue that I am experiencing. I am using an iPAD with IOS version 9.3.5 I need to change the inbound server address for one of my mailboxes as the hosting company has recently made some changes.

As soon as I change this and verify the details through the settings / mail / mail account option my mail vanishes including sent items and is simply replaced with the items that are on the mail server currently.

I would appreciate some guidance on how to secure the existing mail and yet change the inbound server details so that I can continue to receive messages etc.

Kind regards

Simon

Hi. Are you changing from POP3 to IMAP? Do you want to make that change, or is it happening accidentally? To explain, when you use POP, mail is downloaded and stored on your device. This is the way all email worked long ago. With IMAP, mail is stored on the server, and the app on your device is just a window into that storage. You download mail to read it, but not for long-term storage. You can normally tell the two modes because the server is named pop.* or imap.*. Most providers offer both types of access, using different server names and different port numbers.
