Q: Classic iPod reeked havoc on my iTunes!!!  HELP!!!

Can, somebody PLEEEEEAASSSSE help??

I've kept my iTunes library on a external Lacie HD for the last few years.  From time to time I simply open my iTunes from that library, dump new music in and re-sync my iPod classic.  About a week ago, I did this and got an error during the sync.  The iPod is really old, almost full but still works.  Regardless, I had to stop the sync, restore the iPod and redo the sync.  I did it and all was fine....or so i thought.

A night or 2 later i went to play a song on my iPod and noticed that it was NOT there.  In fact, a very large (and random) portion of songs were gone from the iPod.   I went into my iTunes library to double check and found a large number of songs with the red exclamation points.  I'm aware what these mean and was able to reconnect some broken links which gave me back about 200 songs that didn't work.  The rest seem to be totally GONE from my library.  If i go into the album folders all that's left is album artwork files....NO SONG FILES.  I did a title spotlight search on the hard drive for songs and nothing.  What the **** happened???  I'm missing over 2000 songs.  Very random too.   Some albums have half the songs left, some 1 or 2, some none at all.

Even more weird is that if I connect to my iTunes library thats just on my macbook (which is much smaller but shares some of the same songs) one one song/artist will play for that entire section of the alphabet.  For example, The Allman Bros. song "Blue Sky" plays for almost every separate track in the "A" section of my library.  Then is switches to a Beck song for all the "B" songs and so on.  Something evil happened?

It could be my craziness, but i could swear yesterday while trying everything from going back to previous libraries to changing my main media folder location that for a second i did something that made all those songs work again.  While I had that on the screen I selected all the good, working tracks and dumped them on to a flash drive to hopefully dump back in to my corrupted iTunes library and fix everything. I did this and none of the tracks i just dumped on the flash drive appeared.  A bunch of other tracks were there, but they were songs that i didn't need to fix.

I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO!!!!

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!

Since noticing this problem, have you restarted your Mac?

iTunes syncing of media is from iTunes library to iPod, so it's unlikely that the iPod "reeked havoc" on your iTunes library.  More likely, there was (existing but undiscovered) data corruption on your external drive, and syncing caused the problem on the iPod (about a week ago).

Run Disk Utility, and select the external drive volume (indented below the drive) in the Disk Utility sidebar.  Click First Aid.  You can also do First Aid with the drive selected in the sidebar, but a problem is more likely to be detected by checking the volume in this case.  You can also check the MacBook's internal drive.

You don't use Time Machine to back up your user data?  If not, do you use any other backup method, such as cloning?

    Kenichi,

Thanx for the response. I did do some restarts to no avail.  I have not tried first aid on the drive, but i will now!

    See what happens.
