Q: why does Safari not block incoming tracking software such as yimg.com when I have the block turned on?

I have turned on the request to block the incoming tracking software on Safari but it does nothing. I am deluged with stuff such as yimg.com and yahoo.com and 50 or 60 more everytime I open Safari. How do I stop it?

iMac (USB 2.0), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), I have SOPHOS also

Download and install an ad blocker extension of your choice. I like the free version of Ghostery, but there are many others in the Mac App Store to choose from.

It seems to work for some but does not find all. A really irritating one is yimg.com and Ghostery has never indicated it . Any suggestions?

You can try other ad blockers. Some allow much more customizing than Ghostery in terms of adding websites to white- and black-lists.

You should also restart Safari with the Shift key down. This will clear Safari caches, cookies, etc. and might also be of help.
