Q: How do I change effects on the same instrument midway through the song?

Hi, my question is a little difficult to explain so I'll try my best.

I have Garageband 10 for mac and I'm trying to learn how to use it. Specifically, I'm trying to learn to compose electronic music.

I created an instrument, a region, and an AutoFilter effect for that instrument. Later in the song, I want the AutoFilter to stop happening and a new effect to start happening. Is there a way to do this, or do I have to just make another track with the same instrument with different effects?

Thanks.

Use the Track Automation curves to adjust the effects by adding control points in the track automation curve at different times.

To enable automation curves, click the button with the blue automation  curve. Then select the effect you want from the menu of plug-ins in the track header. Command-click or force-click the curve to create control points and drag them up or down.

Hi, thanks for the help, this did help a lot with figuring out my problem.

This seems to work, but is there any way to cancel an effect entirely/turn the effect off in the middle of the piece?

edit: specifically talking about autofilter here, because there appears to be no option

You would have to distribute the audio file across two separate tracks to have one part with the effect and one part without. For "Autofilter" you can only use automation curves for each of the five parameters separately.

You can only automat the individual parameters of a Plugin. However, you cannot automate the on/off switch of a Plugin itself to bypass it at a specific part in your song. That is a feature you need Logic Pro X for.

The procedure with duplicate Tracks that you mentioned is a possible workaround.

    Hope that helps
