Macbook Pro random shutdowns/kernel panics/system beeps, please help

My Macbook Pro has been having random shutdowns with increasing frequency over the past few weeks.

These shutdowns began with what appeared to be a sleep issue. When the lid was shut, the computer would not properly enter sleep mode, would get quite hot, and would shutdown with the series of 3 system beeps which may apparently be indicative of a RAM issue. I dealt with this by ensuring that I manually put the computer to sleep before shutting the screen, and things were fine for a while.

Shutdowns began occurring again, more frequently when I was using the laptop on my lap, and I figured that perhaps pressure on the bottom of the case had dislodged the RAM. I opened the computer and re-seated the RAM, but problems have not only persisted but intensified, making me wonder if there is a logic board issue with RAM connections. As I have two months to finish my PhD, I figured I would restrict my laptop use to only flat desk surfaces so that I could eek out this machine.

Shutdowns continue, and now occur much more frequently. They come in two forms:

1. The computer hangs/freezes during normal use (occasionally, but not always heavy use like Photoshop + three or four other applications running). After the freeze, the computer screen goes blank, but discs still spin and the computer will not respond to wake-up cues. The computer either restarts itself, after which the kernel panic dialogue appears, or, more frequently, a hard re-start is needed and no crash dialogue appears on restart. Occasionally, if the OS attempts to reload windows and applications that were open at the crash, the crash often reoccurs.

2. The computer screen goes blank after a few minutes of idleness, and does not reboot. This has occurred with no other applications running, and has occurred after full reboots fresh after login. My sleep/wake settings are set so that the machine will sleep after 30 min while plugged in, so I am not sure this is simply a sleep mode issue. A hard re-start is required to regain responsiveness, and no crash dialogue appears. This occurs quite frequently now - 5-8 x/day - making the machine almost unusable for even short periods.

My machine:

Macbook Pro Mid 2010 (6,2)

OSX 10.11.6 El Capitan

Intel Core i7 2.66 Ghz duo core

4 GB memory (original memory)

memory specs:

Bank 0/DIMM0: 2 GB DDR3 1067 MHz

Status OK

Bank 1/DIMM0: 2 GB DDR3 1067 MHz

Status OK

NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB

Troubleshooting and other information:

- I replaced my HD last summer from the original drive to a 1 TB HGST SATA, and this has been working fine.

- Disk utility reports that the disc is fine.

- The logic board was replaced in 2013 as part of the NVIDIA faulty logic board replacement program thing. The computer at that time had been experiencing screen glitches of vertical lines that eventually filled half the screen. The replacement at that time returned the machine to normal.

- early kernel panics (3-4 weeks ago) reported last kexts loaded were Avast related; I uninstalled Avast 3 weeks ago.

- I ran Memtest to check if the RAM was bad. Though I understand this won't necessarily diagnose all RAM issues, the RAM checked out ok.

System errors for my last crashes (with no kernel no report):

In the 2 days:

- I removed all user login applications except for Dropbox

- I reset the PRAM (twice now), shutdowns continued

- I did a SMC reset (4x), shutdowns continued

- I booted in safe mode hoping that bad system files / caches would be cleaned up. The computer did not shut down in safe mode when idle, although I cannot run necessary apps in safe mode, so have not thoroughly tested whether applications will cause shutdowns in safe mode.

- After browsing forums, I disabled "allow bluetooth devices to wake computer from sleep mode" and turned off bluetooth entirely, shutdowns continue.

- I cleared Cloudkit caches (which helped with slow loading Finder folder contents)

- I ran Apple Hardware Diagnostics from original install disc; all tests cleared OK

- Re-running disk utility from safe mode again checked out okay.

Please help! I want to be sure I exhaust all possibilities before I do a full OSX reinstallation followed by recovery from my back ups. If there is a higher likelihood that this is a hardware issue that would be great to know, since I'm far beyond my AppleCare warranty.

Thanks.

Beeps at startup are an indicator of "Not enough RAM is working to start up". You are thousands of times more likely to have a failure in one or both DIMMs than a problem that can be solved by re-seating.

Random kernel panics for different reasons add weight to RAM failure as a distinct possibility.

a) Make an appointment for a free evaluation at the genius bar at an Apple store.

b) replace all your memory DIMMs with new ones from a reputable, Mac-centric vendor who can tell YOU what DIMMs belong in your Mac based on the model.

Thanks Grant. I also just used EtreCheck to see if there was anything I missed, and indeed it has indicated insufficient RAM (below). I'm thinking it might be worth purchasing 2x4 GB since it's not too expensive, and it seems Crucial might be a good option. Could it be that my applications and OS are just too memory-greedy to be running on the original 4 GB?

Hi kaz-k,

I have run an Apple Hardware Test from the install disc (my machine is too old to run diagnostic tests from online recovery mode, apparently). I ran the short test (all ok) but also the extended test, which surprisingly didn't take too long and also checked out okay. Is there another way to do a more thorough recursive check via the Apple Hardware Test?

** EDIT **

After posting my last message my machine turned off.

There was no kernel panic recorded, the last Apple system log messages were:

An update:

I replaced my 2x2 GB DIMMS with new 2x4 GB. At first boot, the computer gave three system beeps, so I reseated and tried again. The next boot was fine, and both in safe mode and normally. I booted to AHT and ran multiple extended analyses and all were okay.

I started to put the machine through its paces. First issue: I put the computer to sleep, and just after entering login pw upon wake the computer freezes. The screen does not go blank, but the computer is unresponsive. Holding the power button first resulted in black screen and three system beeps rather than hard restart, as well as fans running but no response. After a true hard restart, the computer booted normally.

I am testing to see if perhaps this is a port issue, so I've removed one DIMM (when the computer is screen down, which is closest to you (top) - bank 1 or 0? I will see if I can replicate the sleep wake issue.

Any thoughts and input again greatly appreciated.
