Q: move my time machine drive to a network connection

I use an external hard drive for time-machine backup of my macbook pro.

I have an airport express wireless router.

I was told that I can set the time-machine back-up to a external hard drive plugged into the router.

This works, at the system level.

However, when I plug my existing time-machine hard drive into the router,

Time-Machine does not recognize that the back-ups on that drive are 'from this machine.'

Do I have to start a new backup over the network?  Or, is there any way to simply

use 'the old backups' (created with the disk plugged into the macbook) as a starting point for the

'the new backups' (with the same disk plugged into the network via airport express).

macbook pro , iOS 6.1.3

The AirPort Express can’t use an USB drive.

If you mean an AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, click here for information.

It’s highly unlikely that a dedicated network drive other than one built into a Time Capsule will or can be formatted for usage with Time Machine.
