Q: Which do I upgrade first?  The Applications or the OS El Capitan?

Hi there.  I am currently running Mountain Lion and need to finally upgrade, as Safari is barely running any longer and I guess it is just that time.

I have a couple of 3rd party Applications that I have already upgraded as they will continue to run on ML and EC, however I am unsure what to do with those like Sonos or MyHarmony.   Do I upgrade those first, even if they will then no longer be accessible on my ML?

Or do I first upgrade to EC and will I then be able to upgrade the Sonos & MyHarmony?

I have Time Machine backing up to a Time Capsule so I assume I can always restore if there's a giant fiasco, but at some point I will have to upgrade.

I'm running a 2012 (later) iMac 2.7 GHz with 8GB

Any advice is highly appreciated.

    Hi Lilskye,

    Thanks for the detailed question!

If you have backed up everything to Time Machine, you can go ahead and check the developers websites to see if their software supports El Capitan.

If it does, you can go ahead and update the software first, then upgrade your Mac to El Capitan.

I always advise to upgrade the software first, otherwise it may be inaccessible when using the new OS.

    Thanks,

    Alex

SONOS 5.4 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: Macintosh® OS X 10.7 and higher:

It shouldn't matter when you upgrade them. What do you mean that they will no longer be accessible?

    Hi!

If the application does not work with El Capitan, then upgrading before updating the application may mean that the auto-updater built into the application may not work and any local-data related to that application may be lost.

It is best practice to update software before your OS, then check for further updates after updating your OS.

    Thanks,

    Alex

Thanks Alex - I believe that the Sonos and Harmony Apps basically will be something that worse case I just have to re-download and set up again.  I was thinking they would be more like a normal App that you have to update first - I've done that to my other 2 3rd party apps (Quicken, etc).  They are supposedly fine with El Capitan.

    Wish me luck!  Thank you!!!

Thanks for the response MacJack - you are right about the Sonos.  I didn't realize there was an update I could do now that works on my existing ML as well as the upgrade.  Done it!  Thanks!

Just a quick update - I successfully upgraded to El Capitan - took only about an hour to download & be up and running.  No dramas at all, only one slight thing with the Calendar which was fixed and now its all great!  THANK YOU!
