memory problems post update 10.11.6?

In the last few days, safari has been giving me the BBOD and crashing multiple times per day. Less critical (but hey, it's a holiday weekend) is the fact that I can't play games (minecraft) because the application keeps running out of memory, despite the fact that I have 32 gb ram. There's a kernel process running at the root level that starts normally, but then spikes to use all available memory (from under 2 GB to 18 GB--yes that's gigabytes--and all applications have to be paused at that time).

Does anyone else have memory issues after this latest update? I don't think it's a coincidence that safari, memory, and kernel processes are involved with the updates and my problems, but I'm no specialist. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm running a 2013 i-mac with 3.5 GHz intel core i7:
