Imac display issues following Yosemite upgrade

Since upgrade to Yosemite my iMac has a very 'glitchy' display... Pixels flashing all over the screen, strange pixels following the mouse etc..

When I boot into safe mode the issue is gone so I assume that it rules out a graphics card issue. I've had a read over other posts and someone suggested to run a script to determine what is causing the error. I've done this but do know know how to decipher the output.

Link to older post with same issue and suggested script etc: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6604981?answerId=30603036022#30603036022

I've ran the script that Linc so kindly posted above and will post the results below:

I wondered if anyone can see what this issue is and suggest how I can get back up and running again.

Any help would be great.

Many thanks,

Devs.

Most people advise not to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

CleanMyMac2 Un-install

After un-installing, use this program to make sure you got all the pieces.

EasyFind – Spotlight Replacement

Uninstall Kapersky. Its tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.

Kapersky Uninstall

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

"CleanMyMac" remains installed. That's not surprising, since its uninstallation instructions do not work. Read below.

It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.

There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.

Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.

To recover from the effects of having used it to modify OS X, the additional software you require and the essential files you need, follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

  • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
  • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.
    • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new User Account whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
    • To erase and install OS X read How to reinstall OS X on your Mac.
      • Follow the instructions in that document under Erase your drive and install OS X.
      • Then, follow the procedure in Move your content to a new Mac.
      • When asked how you want to transfer your information, select Transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk.
      • Under Select the Information to Transfer, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
    • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
    • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.

Since upgrade to Yosemite my iMac has a very 'glitchy' display... Pixels flashing all over the screen, strange pixels following the mouse etc..

When I boot into safe mode the issue is gone so I assume that it rules out a graphics card issue.

Given that your iMac's GPU appears to be functioning normally, the question for you to answer is what will cause its drivers to operate abnormally, or fail to load upon booting normally.

The obvious answer is the presence of ill-conceived "cleaning" and / or "anti-virus" apps, both of which have the demonstrated ability to irreversibly alter OS X's kernel. If you want to use such things, then your Mac is functioning as expected.

Sep 8, 2016 6:56 AM in response to John Galt

Fair comment John and thanks again for the help. I have done as suggested however the issue still persists unfortunately 😟 I have rerun the report and will paste its output below.

Any further help or suggestions would be great. As I need to get up and running again 😟

Many thanks,

Devs.

Numerous processes are crashing. The crashes are not limited to operating system processes, but include "EtreCheck" as well as Microsoft and other products.

In addition to crashing or not loading or otherwise corrupted graphics drivers, the next question for you to answer is what is causing fundamental operating system processes and other programs to crash.

If you remain "quietly confident that CleanMyMac is not the issue here" I leave it to you to provide the obvious answer.

I did as you suggested and wiped and reinstalled. The app that you hate is now got yet my issue persist.

An "erase and reinstall" followed by installing no additional software will result in restoring a Mac to the condition it was when it was built. If you still experience display artifacts, random crashes, and poor performance, then the only possible cause is defective hardware.

I harbor no hatred for apps, no matter what they are or who they're from. The point is that "cleaning" apps are destructive in nature. They work by deleting files, programs and components of programs they consider extraneous. There is no justification for vague assertions that this alleged flotsam causes or contributes to degraded performance or eliminating it can fix anything, yet people continue to succumb to those ridiculous claims with disturbing regularity.

They're all scams with one sole purpose: to take your money, whether or not they are "free".

Excerpted from Effective defenses against malware and other threats:

Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.

  • Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
  • They generally operate on the flawed premise that a Mac accumulates "junk" that needs to be routinely "cleaned out" for optimum performance.
  • Trial versions of those programs are successful because they provide the instant gratification of greater free disk space.
  • That increased space is the result of irreversible destruction of files, programs, or operating system components normally protected from inadvertent alteration or deletion. The eventual result will be unreliable operation, poor performance and random crashes that may not become evident for months or even years after their use, when updates to programs or OS X are eventually released.
  • Memory "cleaners" that circumvent OS X's memory management algorithms work by purging inactive memory contents to mass storage, which can only result in degraded performance and accelerated hardware failure.
  • Imac display issues following Yosemite upgrade
