What is the highest resolution for the 20" iMacs?

In this case, the setting at which it operates best, based on its design.

edit-
Should be the least distortion. For example, if fonts appear to be too small for easy reading, rather than changing the resolution to enlarge everything, to maintain display clarity it would be better to choose larger fonts. I'm sure there's better descriptions in Mac Help or at Support.
