Q: My MacBook Pro was built in Mid 2009, I understand that i will not be able to get the next OS Sierra.  I just put a new 700GB hard drive, plus i added a new battery to include a new CD/DVD player.  I spent over $400 bucks. Do I have to by a new Mac?

If you want Siera you will need a new Mac, but you can continue to use the old one as long as you want to.

Try selling it on eBay, if you can. But it's old and won't fetch much in trade from resellers. Selling it yourself is probably the best way to get the most for it.

The last one released for Mavericks is Security Update 2016-004 for OS X 10.9 Mavericks. This is probably the last year for which Apple will release security updates.

You can upgrade to El Capitan, then you'll have a few years of Security Updates to look forward to.

I already have El Capitan, I was thinking that since my computer won't get the update for the next OS, I need to buy another computer.

I was informed by a rep at the Apple Store that my computer would be useless after a year.

A rep at the Mac Resource Stone said the same thing.

The usual story you get from an Apple representative is you must be running everything up to date. This means buying a new computer every 7 years or so.  Yes, if you want to install Sierra so you can use all the latest features (for what they are worth) you will need a newer computer.  Or you can take a different stand on it (think differently!) and ask if you always need the newest features.  I use a 2008 MacBook with Mavericks and I intend to continue to use it for another couple of years. In fact until 5 months ago I was using a computer build in 2002.   As you can tell I don't think I need to run all of Apple's latest and greatest.   I use iTunes 7.5 under Mavericks.  I don't own any i-gadgets so I am content to run older software which does what I want better than newer versions.  Maybe in a couple years time I will upgrade it to Yosemite or El Capitan, once browser support is dropped for Mavericks by too many programmers.

I agree with Limnos. I have a 2013 Macbook Air, and I ran Mountain Lion until El Cap was about to come out, and then I upgraded to Yosemite so I could then easily go to El Cap. I could still be running Mountain Lion (a lot of people who post here are running it still, and people with older machines are running OS X's like Tiger or Snow Leopard), but I didn't want to be 2 releases behind. That was the only reason I upgraded. I was very happy with Mountain Lion, and found no ill effects from waiting to upgrade.

    Cheers,

I have been answering your questions on a 2009 Macbook Pro, which still works fine. The main difference between me and the Apple Store is that hey want to sell you something.

I totally agree, the Apple Store is in business to make money.  I have no issues with my current lap top.

I'm concerned that the Apps will not update, (i.e. Pages, Numbers, iTunes, just to name a few), I'm thinking once Sierra OS comes out the apps will update to Sierra only.
