Q: Stop Pages from automatically copying documents on iPad

I have Word documents stored in a file in iCloud. The documents are listed in the file. When I  click on one of those documents to open it, Pages opens, a new version of the document is created and then opened.  When I close the document the second version of the document remains in Pages  along with the original. This continues to happen each time I open the document,  each time creating a new version with an automatically generated version number, even when no changes are made to the document. How do I stop this from happening?
