Q: I want to connect a late 2009 iMac to a 5K iMac using Target disk mode. I have several related questions.
The display on my 2009 iMac stopped working two years ago and I replaced the machine with a 5K iMac. At the time I understood that it wasn't possible to connect the two machines in Target disk mode but today I heard about the Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter and started to investigate further.
The hard drive on the 2009 iMac worked when I last switched it on 2 years ago but I could only see stripped coloured lines on the screen.
1. Is it possible to re-establish a bluetooth connection for the mouse and keyboard when I cannot see what's going on? (I long ago removed the batteries in order to store them.)
2. Do I need to to use a mouse and keyboard on the older iMac if all I want to do is transfer files between the two iMacs using the 5K as the Master machine? I expect the answer is yes since I need to hold down the T-key as I start up the older iMac in order to put it into Target mode, but could someone confirm that this is unavoidable? (Hence Q1.)
3. Have others successfully established the connection in similar circumstances using a Thunderbolt-Firewire adapter? Is there anything I should be wary of?
Thank you.
