Q: What to use for both backup and media storage?
What hardware and components should I buy if I want to automatically backup our three Macs and watch downloaded (NOT streamed) movies on our TV?
Here's our current setup:
-Computers: (Mac Mini, MBP, and Air)
-Backup/Router: via TimeCapsule (with our satellite internet plugged into the TimeCapsule via ethernet input)
-Movie/media storage: WD digital hard drive
-I have an Apple TV (3rd gen), but we don't use it...can't stream
We currently live in Kenya, where the internet speeds are not great…hence we can't stream movies. Average speed is around 100 kpbs. Have around 2 TB of movies that we currently watch on TV by plugging a portable hard drive into the DVD player. I know enough about IT to be dangerous (e.g. not much!), but need advice on options on a good way to potentially combine these requirements (backup and movie storage). Potentially something like a new RAID drive plugged into a router. RAID drive does the backups via Time Machine, and then also has the movies on it which can be hardwired (via USB? Ethernet to Apple TV 4th Gen to HDMI to TV?) to the TV for watching movies. Not sure if I need something like Plex media server or something to do that, though.
Many thanks for any help!
