Q: Formula or counting a specific letter in a row or area ?

At the moment, I am creating a water polo stats sheets that records a players stats by assigning them certain characters. I need a formula that counts a specific letter in a row or an area of cells and displays the count in the cell. So for example, lets say, the commas are the border of each cell, and i have a row of 10 cells.

ex:

x,e,g,h,x,x,e,t,y,s

what is the formula that can count the letter "x" in a row and displays the count in a different cell ?
