Q: Guest Account shown when disabled

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)

Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics NVIDIA GeForceGT 750M 2048 MB

 

Since upgrading to 10.11.6, the Guest User is presented on the login screen even though both checkboxes ("Allow guest to log in to this computer" and "Allow guest users to connect to shared folders") are not not checked for the Guest User account.

 

Also, under Login Options the "Display login window as" is set to "Name and password" and not "List of users".

    Have you got FileVault enabled? This may enable a very limited type of Guest account.

    Yes, FileVault is enabled.  However, FileVault has been enabled for a few months now and this is a new problem that has only recently come up.

     

    Is there a way to disable the Guest account regardless of whether or not the FileVault is enabled?  I much preferred it to come up directly with the password text box enabled so that I could immediately enter the password and unlock the machine.

    With FileVault enabled, the guest user is supplementary to Find My Mac. This gives potential criminals/finders of your computer the ability to use the computer in a limited fashion, intentionally.

     

    If there's no guest account, there's no way for someone, other than yourself, to connect to a new Wi-Fi network, and thus allow Find My Mac to report its location back to you.

     

    You would need to disable Find My Mac to remove the Guest user and keep FileVault enabled.
