Why doe this article state that 8 GB is the maximum memory usable though Crucial says 16 GB in some models?

The Apple How-to article says that all models only support 8 GB RAM... Crucial and Kingston disagree.

Any idea why Apple would make such a statement?

I running 16 GB in two machines (late 2011 and mid 2012) and have had no problems.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

They didn’t test it with more than 8GB RAM before it was released(the higher-capacity RAM was either too expensive or completely unavailable then), and Apple didn’t update its specifications afterwards.

Crucial are correct, Apples specifications are out of date (the higher capacity chips did not exist when they were written)
