Why doe this article state that 8 GB is the maximum memory usable though Crucial says 16 GB in some models?

The Apple How-to article says that all models only support 8 GB RAM... Crucial and Kingston disagree.

Any idea why Apple would make such a statement?

I running 16 GB in two machines (late 2011 and mid 2012) and have had no problems.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)
