Q: Mission Control: Can't close empty desktops

Hello all,

I have seen a few posts related to this but no definitive answers. My mid-2011 iMac (OS 10.11.6) has spawned two extra "spaces" or empty desktops in Mission Control, and I am not able to close them, even holding down the Option key. One is named "Calendar" (which I normally do have set to its own desktop, but this is an extra one that will not disappear after quitting that application), and the other simply "Desktop."

This happened a while back, and I believe I fixed it simply by restarting, but that has not worked this time. That said, I should note that the last two restarts (when the problem started) have been out of Boot Camp back into Mac OS. I am not sure if that is relevant.

Thank you!

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1), 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5

FWIW, When you launch Mission Control, a single "Desktop" is listed at the top by default. It's not something you can close.

Thanks for the reply, dialabrain. Normally, I have two already set up, but this extra one was new. Actually, I just checked, and it has since somehow been renamed as "Calendar." So to update, there are 3 desktop spaces named "Calendar," only one of which has been set up manually by myself (and is actually the Calendar). The other two are empty, and scrolling to them causes an automatic "bounce back" effect to the next legitimate desktop.

Do you have an application in full screen mode? That will cause an extra space.

If a Desktop has a specific name, it is an App in Full Screen.

Are you sure Calendar is not still running? You can close a window in OS X and the app will continue to run. You have to use the Quit command to quit most applications. Resume will restart any running Apps after a restart.

I don't know what App would be named Desktop, though.

EDIT: Sorry, some of that was redundant. Because of the new, "improved" forum "features," I couldn't see all the other replies.

FWIW, in my own sometimes clumsy way, I was trying to explain that "Desktop" is the normal desktop when you first launch Mission Control and when you close all other desktops & spaces or quit the apps in them what you are left with is a "Desktop".
