Q: New ipod says it synced but it didn't

It's an ipod nano that I just bought from the apple store.  It's new.  I'm using the cord out of the new box that it came in from the apple store.

Before connecting the ipod to the computer, I uninstalled itunes and then reinstalled it so it was definitely the most up-to-date version.  Then I plugged the ipod into the computer, it showed up, I followed the instructions.  It synced. Whoopee.

...Except there's no music on the ipod.  There is music on itunes, therefore if it had "synced", there would be music on the ipod.

I have "restored" the ipod (even though I just bought it)- no effect.

I have checked that the songs on itunes are checked.  They are.

I have removed it and put it back in.  It just "syncs" again, but there's no music on it.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Sounds like it's actually working, since it does sync.  By default, current iTunes is set to use the Manually manage music and videos setting with iPods.  If you are expecting songs to sync automatically to the iPod when you connect it, you need to change setting to Sync Music.  Currently, iTunes "syncs" iPod, but it's not set up to sync anything.

Here's a screenshot of upper left corner of my iTunes window.  When you connect iPod, its device button appears (circled in red below).

    iPod device button general.png

Click that device button, to show iPod's Summary settings screen.  Along left side of window, in the sidebar, under Settings, click Music.  To the right, the iPod's Music settings screen appears.  Checkmark checkbox for Sync Music.

NOTE:  For anyone else reading this, any songs on iPod that are not in your computer's iTunes library will be lost.

This turns ON automatic syncing.  Below that, if your full iTunes music library can fit on iPod, you can choose to sync Entire music library.  Otherwise, you can choose to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Then, make your selections from the lists below.  A convenient way is to create one or more playlists in your iTunes library, with all the songs you want on iPod.  Back on the iPod's Music settings screen, select the playlist(s) under Playlists.  You don't need to select anything else on those lists (you can if desired).

Click Apply to sync your music library, or selected portion of it, to iPod.  Going forward, iTunes automatically syncs changes to your iTunes music library when you connect iPod (or click Sync if already connected), based on how you set up the iPod's Music settings screen.
