Q: cant' boot in safe mode.  hangs at apple and progress bar

I have an iMac 27 inch with El Capitan.  I am unable to boot in safe mode, it hangs at apple logo and progress bar.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.5)

    It's normal for a Mac to take a long time to boot "Safe Mode". Expect several minutes, at least, assuming your Mac's boot volume is completely error-free.

     

    Just how long is it before you give up?

     

    Can you boot normally?
