Q: how to stop Text Edit from starting when I start my Mac? I'm using OS 10.11.6

Text Edit automatically starts when I turn on my Mac Book Pro. It brings up a plist file. I'm running OS 10.11.6. Does anyone have a suggestion?

That's part of the whole "Let's turn the Mac OS into an iPad" thing Apple tried to do starting with Lion, 10.7.x. That is, all apps starting up where you last left off on each restart or startup. Many users hated it. Apple then placed functions in Mountain Lion and forward to kill this behavior.

    1) From the Apple menu at the top left of the screen, choose Restart or Shut Down. Doesn't matter which one. Turn off the check box, then click Cancel.

The OS will permanently remember this choice.

    2) Open the System Preferences. Under the General tab, turn the check boxes on for Ask to keep changes when closing documents, and Close windows when quitting an app.

That should stop not just TextEdit, but any app from opening itself on startups or restarts. Unless you have them in your Login Items of your user account. Then they'll launch every time anyway. System Preferences again. Click on Users & Groups. Click your user account name at the left, then the Login Items tab at the right. If there are apps in the list you don't want to run every time your Mac boots or restarts, highlight each one and click the minus button to remove it.

    You're welcome.

The other benefit of turning on Ask to keep changes when closing documents is apps that do use Autosave/Versions will not save files or changes without your consent.

There are people who love the way Autosave/Versions works. Just close the file and it's saved. You don't have to remember to do it. But I don't want the OS to save things for me. If I change my mind about something I started to do in a document, I shouldn't have to waste time finding the previous version to revert to. With this check box on, you'll instead get choices of Revert Changes, Cancel and Save. Revert Changes will have the same effect as the old Don't Save. It's also not a huge bother for those who do want to save the changes since Save is the default. So when you close a document, it's just one more small thing you have to do to save. Click the Save button, or press the Enter key.
