Problems reading gpg signed messages in mail

when I receive mail messages that have been signed by GPG (Gnu Privacy Guard) I get the subject displayed and it then sits forever downloading the body. I assume what is happening is that it gets the signature attachment and is thrying to do something with it.

I am sure this used to work. I tried to use a couple of the gpg based secure email apps by the were all cumbersome so I deleted them. I suspect that one left some settings somewhere that is now interfering with mail.
