    YYes ok what backup? I was told to do this by an apple 'tech' over the phone I did as I was told it was to restore a disabled iPad he said I needed to update to el capitan and I just did what he said was over the moon because that worked but now I have this issue and tbh am absolute in tears

    If you had iPhoto before the update, it should still there. Upgrading to El Capitan does NOT delete this.

    In the Finder, open the Pictures folder: press command-shift-H to go to your home folder then open the Pictures folder inside it. That is where the iPhoto library is stored by default. It will still be there and called "iPhoto Library" unless you have at some point named it something else or stored it somewhere else.

    This is a "package" and has all the pictures stored inside it. So even if one can't run an older iPhoto and if Photos cannot import this, at least your valued pictures can be manually recovered. But first do look carefully to find it.

    You can also use Spotlight to try and locate that library. An iPhoto library has a hidden file extension ".photolibrary".

    Open a Spotlight search (by clicking the magnifying lens or just pressing command-space) and type ".photolibrary"

    (without the quotes). The iPhoto library should appear in the list. Select it and press command-R to see it in its folder in Finder.

    You made a typo.

    You missed a dot between apple and iPhoto.

    You didn't copy and paste. You just tried to type it in and got it wrong.

    defaults read com.apple.iPhoto | grep RootDirectory

        NSNavLastRootDirectory = "/Users/Shared/Library";

        RootDirectory = "/Users/julie/Pictures/iPhoto Library.photolibrary";

    No worries. I ask you to copy and paste because 99% of people will get it wrong if they try to type. Terminal is uncharted territory for most.

    That output says your iPhoto Library should be in your Pictures folder and you say when you open your Pictures folder it is not there, correct?

    If it is not there, did you create a new user account when you set up El Capitan?

    no its not there only the most recent 100 pics, I don't think I created a new account not too sure I was trying to get the version 9 of iPhoto and went to the app store it said not available so I just went onto the photo one on the bottom of the screen and opened that, if thats what created a new account then yes but I don't remember putting any details in it apart from clicking on it

    It appears to me that you are looking inside Photos.

    When we ask if it is not there, we don't mean the pictures, we mean the file called "iPhoto Library".

    Hi, sorry you are having problems. Do you have a Time Machine backup from before you updated to El Capitan?

    hmmm, okay, try this, in the Finder search field, start to type in the word "image" and in the drop down menu under "Kinds" select the word "Image" then click on "This Mac" if it's not already selected. That should give you a list of every image that is on the drive. You can scroll through the list and see if any familiar names are in it.
