Right I when I replied to you only had the 103 photos that I'd been able to recover. I have since by associating with 'preview app' recoverd a few more. Before all this upgrade malarkey I had several folders on the left hand side that I had named according to which event, and hazarding a guess there must have been around 1,000/1,500  with videos saved in with them too

Ok, I'm confused. I thought you couldn't run iPhoto? But, that may have just been an assumption on our part based on what we have seen with others.

Your screen shot is of iPhoto, not Photos.

What do you see when you open Photos? -- it should be in the Dock:

    Screen Shot 2016-09-08 at 7.19.01 PM.png

The screen shot of your iPhoto Library indicates it has at least several hundred photos in it, based on the size. I wouldn't expect it holds 1000 or 1500 unless your camera has very low resolution.

It is obvious that your iPhoto Library wasn't deleted, and it does contain photos. Upgrading to El Capitan should not delete you iPhoto Library (and it didn't), and it certainly wouldn't delete only some of the photos.

Are the photos that currently show up in iPhoto yours? Or, do they belong to the person who owns the iPad you helped out with?

I have managed to take a screen print of what I can get the one on the right is in preview because I chose another programme to open the photos in that is the one with over 300 pics in the other tow are iPhoto and photo they are the ones with the 103 in.  the one on the left BEFORE updating had all different folders on the lefthand side underneath those words you can see they are the ones as you see are no longer there and the ones I am trying to find

The folders really are irrelevant to finding your photos. The actual files weren't stored in those folders. The folders, albums, events, etc. do not hold the files. We may be able to recover the Albums and such, but it is possible we cannot. There should be no reason the photos are actually missing, so we should be able to recover those.

Can you open both iPhoto and Photos, select the Photos heading in the sidebar. Are all of your photos listed there?

If you can post the screen shots you mentioned, it may help determine where the photos are located.

Not entirely sure what you are saying but, there were two different libraries in your Picture folder. The "iPhoto Library" and the "Photos Library". One was 2.5 times the size of the other. Which is why I asked you to open the "iPhotos Library" in "Photos". Glad you have your pictures back. No more crying.

Can you explain that in more detail. It may be helpful in helping others in the future.

I had to go into finder, devices my iMac from there open users, choose what I have it named in this case my name i julie, in there there are many folders they all had a red no entry sign on each one, i had to click onto one of them then go to the 'cog wheel' above it, click the dropdown menu at its side and choose get info another box appears, down the bottom of this is a list of names click the + click on one of the names and you choose admin (you have to be the administrator) and then by the name you choose read & write and when you go back to the box with your name in from the iMac the red no entry sign gives you access to it and you can get whatever is in it...oops I forgot you have to click the padlock down near the + sign to enable you to do all the above, when you click that padlock a window pops up to which you type in your user name and password that you use for your computer.

For some reason ALL of my folders were locked and I had to do this to everyone of them time consuming but SOOO worth it I got everything back

Half of the discussion was hidden, when I replied - sorry.

Somehow your older reply turned up as new.
