I have tried all 4 of the HDMI ports

my computer is 2013 macbook pro retina--the tv is a 1 year old samsung

MacBook Pro with Retina display, iOS 6.1.4

Try this support article > Use your TV as a display

If you have an Apple TV you can use AirPlay to view your Mac's display on the TV via HDMI.
