Q: siri using data all of a sudden

I keep siri turned off and have noticed that for no apparent reason it has started using cellular data in system services, about 500kb a day. any ideas on why this is happening?

iPhone SE, iOS 9.3.5

Are you certain it's 500KB per day?

I have Siri turned on and active.  I use it on occasion while not on Wi-Fi.  It has used 501KB total since I last reset my counter 23 days ago.

The iPhone SE allows "Hey Siri" to trigger Siri even when the iPhone is not plugged in.  So perhaps you have not turned off Settings > General > Siri > Allow Hey Siri.

If this is "On", then of course the iPhone has to be prepared to hear "Hey Siri" at any time and respond.

my iphone SE has an on/off for siri and a language. thats it. there really is no plausible reason for the amount of data that is being used with siri always turned off. there is clearly something wrong with the phone.

Don't you see settings like this under Settings > General > Siri?  If you don't, try turning on Siri for a moment and see if "Allow Hey Siri" appears.

when I turned on siri the settings appeared and hey siri was off. I turned it on then off again and then turned off siri. I also did a hard reset with home on/off. also turned off siri suggestions in spotlight search although with siri off this should not matter much. In any case as stated there is no reason that amount of data should be used with siri always off.
