Q: Why do I get notification sounds when there are no notifications?

My iPhone 6S has suddenly started giving me repeated notification alerts when there are no notifications. This goes on continuously and then stops for a while. The alerts begin again after a while. I just upgraded to IOS 9.3.5 (13G36) and they seem to have stopped, but it's been only a few minutes.

Can you confirm what type of notification this is? Is it for text/iMessages?

If so, repeat alerts may be enabled for Messages in Settings.app -> Notifications -> Messages.
