Q: Why is Safari so slow and does not block pop-ups??

Just typing this post was an excercise in patience.  I constantly get the bouncing ball while waiting to continue typing.

My Prefs has 'Block pop-up windows' checked and yet no matter what website I visit I constantly have to put up with pop-up videos.  This behavior has been going on over the past few months.

I am using V9.1.2 (11601.7.7).

Thanks.

OK, I walked through the TextWrangler suggestion and found that my code matched exactly the paste-in Host code, so I just left it as it was.  I also followed the Wacom driver suggestion and deleted my Wacom Tablet driver for good measure.

    Bottom line

I seem to see slight improvement, but as I began typing this post I once again was confronted with the bouncing ball and had to wait to continue typing.  On webpages that are long Safari still locks up, but not as bad as it was prior to the driver deletion.  Further webpage testing reveals that pages continue to freeze without getting the bouncing ball.

This all very annoying and am not certain that I have made any real improvements to this problem.  Time will tell, I suppose.

    Thanks!

I just shut down Safari and re-launched it while watching the Activity Monitor and was shocked to see that on start-up Safari used 7 GB of ram.  The Safari Networking is using 23.6 MB of ram.  My iMac now has 32GB and wonder how  Safari got by when I only had 8 GB?

After Safari launched its 'Real mem' value is 3.78 GB of ram.  That seems excessive to me since I only have two webpages open, so apparently Safari needs lots of ram to operate with.

There are several possible reasons for what you are encountering.

    Begin with the following:

    1. Shut down your Mac.
    2. Load OS X Recovery by holding and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac with a third finger.
    3. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, release those two fingers.
    4. Choose Get Help Online.
    5. Safari will launch, but it will lack your bookmarks, favorites, history and other preferences.
    6. Load a few web pages and observe the results.

Restart your Mac normally and describe your results.

If the problem does not occur in Recovery mode, but returns after restarting your Mac normally, please read If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support. The applicable section is "Remove Internet plug-ins and other add-ons" and the Support documents that follow "Learn more".

If there is no change in behavior while in Recovery mode please write back for more suggestions.
