Q: iPad Pro not locking

I Have a brand new iPad Pro as well, I have a brand new iPad Pro Smart Cover , or so the box it came in says. The settings are set to lock/ unlock but it doesn't work. How do I know if it's the case that isn't working and not a problem with the iPad ?
