Q: trying to import a photo to word

trying to import a photo to word and photos won't open. when i updated the operating system i notice that not all my pictures saved over the years did not save into the Picture icon. now when i load new photos from the web, iphone etc into Photos (under Media in the side bar) sometimes the new photos show up so I can insert into msword and sometimes they don't. How can i fix this.
