El capitan update not recognising my phone

After updating my macbook air to El Capitan my laptop won't recognise any devices including an iphone4 and seagate hard drive. Any ideas how to fix this?

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

Only iTunes recognizes an iPhone.

For the Seagate drive, go to Finder > Preferences > General then make sure: External disks is selected.

Thank you. How do I get itunes to recognise my iphone 4? And Photos? They were recognised before, it's only since updating.

Are you using iTunes? If you have the Photos application open before you attach the phone, does it see it? If it does see it, if you select the phone, there should be an option at the top left to open Photos when the phone is attached.
