I cannot use the apple ( top left) to shut the mac down

When I want to switch off my mac the apple symbol on the top left does not give any responce. Even the restart when i want te do a required update is no going to restart the system. Only when i hold the powerbutton I can switch of my Mac. Any suggestions?

Next, click on the shutdown icons and not the exact time you do that. Then open the Console app in Finder>Applications>Utilities and look for log entries at the time of the reboot. Post suspicious ones here.

- If you do not have a backup use disk utility to restore the internal disk to an external disk so you can try to recover data.

Then format the startup disk and do a fresh install of OSX
