I have not seen anything that purports to change that.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem or a suggestion for improvement. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem/suggested change solved sooner.

If it is any consolation, if you are in a full screen app and invoke mission control the icons are on display.

Only from a desktop do you have to move your mouse to the top to expand the word descriptions to icon view.

Personally I do not see this as a drawback in my work flow.
