Q: Motion 5 playback is slow

Hi there!

I've been using Motion 5 for a few years. Now, it is playing very slow. 10 to 15 IPS. It happens suddenly in any project.

I changed couple things in the settings to help but it didn't change anything.

The only thing, my project is on an external hard drive. I don't think it is the problem. It happens always after I added a behavior in my project.

Can someone help me on this?

Thanks!

Here's my technical infos:

OS X El Capitan

Version 10.11.15

MAcBook Pro 15 2012

2,6 GHz Intel Core i7

8Go 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650 1024 Mo

Motion 5, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)

What specific behavior(s)?  Have you tried moving your project to another drive to verify it's not the drive you are working off of?  What are the settings you are using in your project, do you have things like Motion Blur, Depth of Field, Shadows enabled?  Is this an HD project (720/1080) or 4K? Is your canvas set to Best or Normal?  Are you saying that a project you created 2 years ago now plays slow, or just any new project?  Have you changed anything else about your system configuration recently (installed new hardware or software)? Does RAM preview not improve playback?

Just saying that Motion is playing slower doesn't give a lot to go on.  There are so many factors that can impact performance that unless you share more details about your project it's hard to give a specific suggestion.  Even saying you changed some settings, doesn't let us know enough.  Was it system settings or app settings, and which ones in particular?

    Starting points would be:

    • Disable motion blur if it is enabled
    • Use Normal mode
    • Turn off shadows
    • Try a RAM preview
    • If elements in you project have settings for better vs. faster (like 3d particles) set to faster for preview
    • Try running your project off another drive or the main drive

I also noticed that your system is running 10.11.5, if you are at a good point to update the OS you could do that, 10.11.6 is the current version.  Also, you didn't mention which version of Motion you are running, is that up to date (5.2.3)?
