Restore names on list in Messages

I am using an iMac OSX-ElCapitan Version 10.11.6.

With the last update, the look of Messages changed. I no longer have a list of names next to their circle icons on the left side of the screen. I only have the circles. Since almost nobody in my contacts includes a pictures, the circles just show initials - very difficult to figure out who is who. Is it possible to restore the names in this list of people I Message with?
